Jake Morse of Texas gamely chased down the lead on third lap of the anchor. He pulled even at the bell and dogged Arkansas’ Dorian Ulrey down the stretch. But he ran out of gas and Villanova’s Matthew Gibney and Ulrey were left to duke it out. Gibney pushed ahead for the win, 9:30.81 to 9:32.79.
This is Villanova’s 23rd victory in the Penn DMR, and first since 2001.
