Boys High School Shot Put: Vena Sets Penn Record
Nicholas Vena of Morristown, NJ, absolutely destroyed the Penn Relays record in the boys high school shot put. Vena got the ball out 72 feet, 2-1/2 inches (22.01 meters), almost five feet better than the old mark, set in 1985 by J.J. Grant of Liverpool, NY (67-3/20.50).

Friday's Attendance: 39,501
Great weather means a great crowd: Today’s attendance was 39,501, making it the third biggest Friday crowd in Penn Relays history. (The record, 39,943, was set in 2006.)
Combined with Thursday’s crowd, that brings our two-day total to 63,816. A Saturday crowd of 50,379 would break the Carnival’s three-day attendance record. in 2006 we drew 114,194.
2009 College 4×400 Men’s Heats

Our next event consists of the qualifying heats in the college 4×400.
Heat 1 featured some great times: Florida State, 3:05.83, Texas A&M 3:07.92, TCU, 3:08.29

College Men's Distance Medley Relay

Texas is going for its fourth consecutive Penn championship in this event.
Slow early pace (2:00 @ 800) on the first leg, until Arkansas broke it open to hand off first in 2:56.0. Villanova, Princeton and Texas follow.

College Women's Shuttle Hurdle Relay
Central Florida wins the first heat in 54.07, with UNC second in 55.23.
Heat 2 goes to Eastern Kentucky in 58.45.
And heat 3 is won by Towson in 59.32.

High School Girls Championship 4×100

It is time for our championship heat, with 7 Jamaican schools and 2 schools from the US. However, Eleanor Roosevelt (MD) does have the fastest qualifying time.

As a preliminary to our High School Championship 4×100 for girls, we have two other heats for fast 4×100 teams. These heats are the next fastest teams beyond the Top 8, divided into size of school.
Our large school winner is Rancho Verde from California in 46.72, with Withrow (OH) in 46.86 for 2nd place.

And they’re off. Defending champions Texas A&M blew out heat 1 with a 1:32.65 clocking.
Heat 2 is won by LSU in 1:35.14.
Heat 3: Auburn edges Oklahoma, 1:32.85 to 1:33.27
Heat 4: Hampton looks good in 1:35.33
Heat 5: University of Technology (JAM) shows they’ll be a factor in the final, winning in 1:33.99

Our next event is the 4×200 for men – always an unusual event because of the very long stagger.
Clemson wins Heat 2 in 1:23.70, St. Augustine wins heat 3 in Heat 3 in 1:23.50. A&M takes over the top time with a 1:22 in Heat 4. South Carolina also ran 1:22.

College Women's 4×1500 Championship

Florida’s Charlotte Browning had the early lead but Tennessee’s Channelle Price took control on the last lap and handed off first in about 4:20. Georgetown, Washington and Villanova were right there, as those four teams separate from the pack.

College Women's 4×100 Championship
After the first leg it was all Texaas A&M. The Aggies cruise to a 43.10 win — the #6 time in Penn history. That’s the first time the Aggies have won this event. Auburn (44.13) was more than a second back as runner-up. Two-time defending champ LSU did not finish the race.

Our first championship of the day, the High School Girls 4×800, is on the track. There are a number of Jamaican teams that have run very fast times in this race, even if the qualifying times from yesterday’s cold start do not reflect it.

High School Girls Discus: Halvorson Sets Record
Aslynn Halvorson of Butler HS (Matthews, NC) broke the Penn Relays record in the high school girls discus this morning. Halvorson threw 161 feet, 8 inches (49.28 meters) to break the 160-5 (48.90) mark of Linda Grigoriev (Atholton HS, Columbia, MD), set in 2003. Halvorson finished second at last year’s Relays.
