College Men’s 4×400 Championship

After dropping the baton at the final exchange, Texas A&M’s Tabarie Henry made a valiant effort to close the gap, splitting 46.06 and and nearly pulling off an epic comeback. Alas, he ran out of track and Mississippi State held on for the win, 3:04.92–3:05.04.

College Women’s 4×400 Championship

UTech wins for the second year in a row, with a 3:31.54–3:32.34 victory over Oregon. Stephenie McPherson’s 51.06 anchor leg was decisive.
Texas A&M (3:32.86) and Penn State (3:33.06) were third and fourth. Fawn Dorr ran a fantastic third leg in 52.05 for Penn State to give the Nittany Lions the lead at the final exchange.

College Men’s 4×800 Championship

Virginia wins its first Penn Relays men’s Championship of America since 1943 with a 7:15.38 clocking.
On the opening leg, Owen Dawson handed off first for Penn State with everyone still in contention.

It’s been another busy day for jumpers and throwers. Here are the championship-division winners:
Olympic Development Men
• Jacob Freeman (NYAC) won the hammer throw with a 229′ 11″ (70.08) toss. That’s his second straight win in the event, and he also won the college division twice (2001, 2002) for Manhattan College. Results.

College Women’s 100-meter hurdles: Queen Harrison (Virginia Tech) takes the lead at the third hurdle and goes on to win in 12.61 a new Penn Relays record (wind: +1.1). Results.

College Women’s Relay Athlete of the Meet
Gabby Mayo of Texas A&M is your 2010 college women’s athlete of the meet for relay events. Mayo ran on three winning relays teams for the Aggies, the 4×100 (43.09), the 4×200 (1:29.42) and the shuttle hurdles (52.50). The 4×2 and shuttle hurdle times established new collegiate records.
College 4×200 Championships
Our next set of championships is the college 4×200, always an interesting event because of the four (!) turn stagger.
On the women’s side, Texas A&M set a new collegiate record in 1:29.42 !
Tavaris Tate ran an excellent final 200 leg, just holding off Florida’s Calvin Smith on the men’s side in 1:21.49. Results here.
College Women’s 4×800 Championship

LSU’s Charlene Lipsey took it out hard and immediately set the stage for a great run. Tennessee’s Kimarra McDonald handed off in second, about five meters back.
On the second leg Tennessee’s Chanelle Price gradually closed down on LSU’s Kayann Thompson, but Thompson had a final burst to maintain the lead.

Texas A&M used excellent exchanges to destroy the field in 39.08, a full eight-tenths up on UTech (39.88). The Aggies won for the second straight year.

Our first championship of this afternoon is the college men’s 4xMile. Certainly Oregon might be considered the favorite in this race. Many have felt that the 16:04 relays record, held by Michigan with Nick Willis, may be in jeopardy.

Our next championship in this flurry is the set of Sprint Medleys (200m, 200m, 400m, 800m), with women followed by men.

The University of Oregon captured its first-ever Penn Relays Championship of America with a relatively easy 9:30.69 victory.

College Shuttle Hurdle Relays

In the college men’s shuttle hurdle relay, Clemson led wire-to-wire and won in 56.45. Nebraska anchor Tyler Hitchler came on strong at the end, but the Huskers (56.53) were runners-up for the second straight year. Results.

College Women’s 4×1500 Championship

Tennessee defended its title with a 17:14.91 victory over Villanova.
On the opening leg Oregon’s Nicole Blood went to the lead on the third lap, and handed off first with Chanelle Price of Tennesee closing fast, followed by Villanova, Wake Forest and Columbia.

College Women’s 4×100 Championship

Our second women’s championship is the 4×100 (approximately 5 minutes ahead of schedule !).
Anchored by Gabby Mayo, Texas A&M has defended their title in 43.09—which is No. 6 All-Time here at the Penn Relays—with LSU second in 43.30. A&M ran 43.10 last year; high marks for consistency.

CW Steeplechase

Sarah Pease of Indiana outlasts Claire Michel of Oregon, winning the College Women’s Steeplechase. Pease won the Drake Relays steeple last year – and now has a Penn Relays championship as well. Certainly a very interesting double !

Event 70: College men’s steeplechase: Donn Cabral of Princeton wins in 8:48.92. Results.

University of Technology, Jamaica, was the fastest seed with 3:32. We had a little bit of lightning delay but we’re back on track.
College Women’s 4×400 Heats
The women’s 4×400 heats are off. In the first heat, Jamaica’s UTech pulled away from Texas with 200 meters to go for a 3:32.81–3:33.54 victory.
In Heat 2, Texas A&M came from behind to win in 3:33.06, with Oregon (3:36.12) and early leader Virginia Tech (3:37.34) finishing second and third.
