It’s been another busy day for jumpers and throwers. Here are the championship-division winners:
Olympic Development Men
• Jacob Freeman (NYAC) won the hammer throw with a 229′ 11″ (70.08) toss. That’s his second straight win in the event, and he also won the college division twice (2001, 2002) for Manhattan College. Results.

High School Boys Individual Athlete of the Meet
Pat Schellberg of Delbarton School has been named the high school boys individual athlete of the meet after breaking the Carinval record in the mile run with his 4:08.07 victory.
High School Boys 4×100 Championship
Wolmer’s Boys (Jamaica) just tore it up in the high school boys 4×100 championship, scorching a Penn Relays record 39.78. The old record: 39.91 by Calabar (Jamaica) last year.
That time would have finished second in the college championship!

High School Girls Relay Athlete of the Meet
Chris Ann Gordon of Holmwood Tech has been named the High School Girls’ Outstanding Relay Athlete of the 2010 Penn Relays.
Gordon anchored two winning relays on Friday, the 4×400 and the 4×800. In the 4×400 she split 52.8 to finish off a 3:39.66, and in the 4×8 she ran 2:09.95 for Holmwood’s 8:42.49.
High School Girls 4×400 Championship

Jamaica’s Holmwood Tech completes an astonishing day with a 3:39.66 victory. Earlier Holmwood won the 4×100 and 4×800 championships. Pat Schelleberg (Delbarton School, NJ) took the lead just before the half mile and opened up a margin of 15 meters at the bell (3:05) and finished in 4:08.07, to just get under the Penn Relays record of 4:08.13, run last year by Canadian Jeremy Rae.

High School Boys’ DMR Championship

Our first boys’ championship of the meet is the High School Distance Medley relay. This is an extraordinarily deep field.

Friday Field Event Highlights

The men and boys joined the field event action on Friday. Here are the championship-division winners:
College Men
• Stanley Gbagbeke of Middle Tennessee won the long jump at a wind-aided 25′ 11″ (7.90). His best legal jump was 25′ 8-1/4″ (7.83). NCAA Indoor champion Alain Bailey took second at 25′ 9-1/2″ (7.86). Results.

High School Girls 4×100 Championship

Holmwood Tech won in 45.41, well clear of second place, fellow Jamaican school Herbert Morrison (45.81).
Five of the eight finalists were from Jamaica. Jamaican teams have now won this event seven straight years and 13 of the past 14.
Noted Jamaican radio personality Ed Barnes called the race, much to the delight of the crowd.

High School Girls 4×800 Championship

Holmwood Tech of Jamaica put on a dominating performance, winning this event for an event-record eighth time. Their time of 8:42.49 is the third fastest ever at the Relays. Edwin Allen, also of Jamaica was second in 8:47.73.

With our high school girls’ individual events complete, the Penn Relays has selected Akela Jones of Springer Memorial High School (St. Michael, Barbados) as the high school girls individual athlete of the meet. HSB 4×100 Trials

We’re in the middle of our 4×100 High School Boys trials, which are from 10:40-12:30. There are approximately 70 heats or so, maybe a few more. A ranked list can be found here.
HSB 4×800 Is Complete

We have completed the high school boys 4×800, with Long Beach Poly (CA) running a sizzling 7:43. You can view the ranked list here.
High School Girls Distance Races

Angel Piccirillo (Homer Center, PA) and Emily Lipari (Roslyn Heights, NY) won the HSG Mile and 3K respectively. Lipari’s time of 9:34 moved her into the Top 10.
High School Girls DMR

Blacksburg (VA) smashed the Penn Relays record in the girls DMR with a spectacular 11:38.69 clocking. That erases the 11:40.51 run by Vere Tech (Jamaica) all the way back in 1992 and is the ninth fastest time ever by an U.S. high school team.

Philadelphia Public Championship 4×400
To finish our afternoon session of 4×400’s, we have the traditional Philadelphia Public school heat. The winner this year was Swenson High in 3:59. William Penn of Philadelphia has won the HSG Championship many times.

We are in the midst of two hours of heats of the high school girls’ 4×100-meter relay. This is where the Penn Relays really shows off its efficiency. Races go off like clockwork, and the athletes are carefully shuffled from check in to paddock to the track. It’s a wonder to watch.

The four sections of the high school girls’ 4×800 are over and Jamaica’s Edwin Allen flirted with running sub-nine, before settling in at 9:01.
